module 4 The magic of the mask
摘 要:It’s my great honor to share my lesson with you. I have been ready to begin this presentation with four parts, that is, analysis of the teaching material, the teaching methods and the learning methods, the teaching procedures, and the blackboard design.

Ⅰ.Analysis of the teaching material
I will begin from the first part, analysis of the teaching material. Three aspects are included in this part. They are the understanding of this lesson, the teaching aims , the important points and the difficult points.
1.The understanding of this lesson
The title of the reading part is The Magic of the Mask , from the New Senior English for China Book5 Module4. By learning this part, we will enable students to know more about carnival , such as different carnivals in different countries,the origins of carnival, and develop their interest in various of western cultures and traditional Chinese cultures.
The Magic of the Mask is the first reading part of this module, which plays a very important role in the whole module. If the students can master this part well, it will be helpful for them to study the rest of this module.
2.Teaching Aims
According to the new standard curriculum and the syllabus , I will establish the teaching aims as followings:
(1)Knowledge objects
Master the usage of the important words and expressions and understand the main idea of the passage.
(2)Ability objects
To improve students’ overall abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing, especially the speaking and reading ability.
(3)Emotional objects
Develop students’s interest in different cultures and learn to view the world in a multicultural vision.
3.The Important and Difficult Points
Based on the requirement of the syllabus, the important points of the part are to enable students to master the new words , phrases and the important sentence structures in the passage and develop students’ scanning and skimming skills.
The difficult point is to retell the passage with their own words and write a short passage about their favourite Chinese festivals.
Ⅱ.Teaching Methods and Learning Methods
To achieve the teaching aims better, I will use the task-based teaching method,Computer-Assisted Instruction and cooperative learning method . I will try my best to limit TTT, that is, limit Teacher Talking Time and increase STT ,that is,Student Talking Time.
Ⅲ.Teaching Procedures
Now let’s come to the main part of a class, part 3, teaching procedures. I have designed 6 steps to improve students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities. They are lead in, pre-reading, while-reading, post-reading, consolidation,and homework.
Step 1 Lead in Purpose: To arouse students’interest in learning about the festivals.
At the beginning, I will wear a mask to attract students’ attention and ask them to discuss what festivals we wear a mask.
Next , I will show some pictures about different western festivals and Chinese festivals and ask students to discuss with each other to match the festivals with the pictures.
Step 2 pre-reading purpose: to check the preview work.
. In the last class, I have asked students to preview the passage and find out all the sentences about the descriptions of the mask. In order to check their preview work , I will pass the mask from the firs one student to the last one student while I am playing some music . When the music stops,the student who gets the mask will have to give us some sentences about the mask from the text.
Step 3 while-reading Purpose: To develop some basic reading skills and get some information about carnival.
In order to develop students’ some basic reading skills and get some information about carnival, I will design three tasks.
Task1. Listen to the tape and check the topics it mentions.
Task 2. Skim the text and match the topics with the paragraphs in pair work.
When doing skimming task, students don’t need to read the whole passage word by word . The skimming task only requires students to get the main information of the passage. This skill will help students to develop the ability to find out the key words and key sentences to understand the main idea of the passage. It is helpful to increase students’ reading speed.
Task 3. Scan the text and answer the detailed questions.
By doing this task, I design some questions according to the ideas of each paragraph and ask students to scan the text and choose the best answer.
Step 4 post-reading
This step can be divided into two sections, practice section and discussion section.
In the practice section, it aims to improve students’ ability of using language and help them to master the important sentence structures of the passage.
In the discussion section,it aims to improve students’ability of speaking and develop their cultural awareness.
Step 5 Consolidation
In this part I will ask students to fill in the blanks in pair work . This task can enable students to learn about the details of the text and help them to talk about carnival .
Step 6 Homework
I will ask students to write a short passage about students’ favourite Chinese festival to improve their writing abilities and retell the text .
Ⅳ.the blackboard design
A good blackboard design should contain the main knowledge points of the class and help students to organize their thoughts well. Therefore, l will divide the blackboard into 2 parts. The left part will be used to write the important vocabulary and grammar. The right part will be used for explanation. I will write some sentences to explain the meaning of some words and expressions.
